Final Score: 808’s & Heartbreak - 5 IGOR - 7 Winner: IGOR Easiest decisions: Tracks 8 and 10 Hardest decisions: Tracks 3, 5, 6, and 9 Fun fact: This was hard. Fun fact #2: Tyler, The Creator’s IGOR was recorded almost sequentially, acting as a full story arc of 3 acts. Kanye West’s 808’s & Heartbreak was recorded following the death of his mother, Donda, and his split with fiancé Alexis Phifer. Favorite Projects Released in 2017:
Head to Head Tracklist Comparison [#3]: Tyler, The Creator - Goblin (2011) vs. Wolf (2013)10/1/2021
Final Score: Wolf - 15 Goblin - 3 Winner: Wolf Easiest decisions: Tracks 6, 8, and 14 Hardest decisions: Tracks 3 and 7 Fun fact: Tyler, The Creator’s first 3 albums form a full story arc in the order of Bastard (2009), Wolf (2013), and Goblin (2011), with some Odd Future songs making it into this mix as well (ex. “Sam Is Dead” on the Odd Future Tape, Vol. 2). There are videos explaining the entire arc available on YouTube. Favorite Projects Released in 2016:
1. JPEGMAFIA - THE BENDS!
My favorite of JPEGMAFIA’s EP! releases throughout 2020, this song details the hardships Peggy faced at the time and several slick politically charged bars - in true JPEGMAFIA fashion. Funnily enough, this track references both Radiohead (through the title) and Earl (with the mention of Earl’s former stage name, Sly Tendencies). 2. Radiohead - The Bends The title track to their sophomore record, Radiohead contemplates who’s there for them when they are needed. Another ode to the negative, high-pressure side to a life of newly acquired fame, this song excellently depicts exactly what “the bends” is. 3. Earl Sweatshirt - The Bends Although this is one of my least favorite tracks instrumentally on Earl’s renowned 2018 record Some Rap Songs, simply acting as a means of passage to the following song “Azucar”, it does provide a bar here or there worthy of thought.
Lonerism - 7 Currents - 6 Winner: Lonerism Easiest decisions: Tracks 1 and 4 Hardest decisions: Tracks 3, 9, and 10 Fun fact: The claymation music video for “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” off of Lonerism was directed by Joe Pelling and Becky Sloan, creators of the YouTube series “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared.” Favorite Projects Released in 2015:
1. King Krule - “Border Line”
An excellent song from one of my favorite album discoveries this year, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon. Probably one of the more up-tempo, good mood songs on the record, this served as my introduction to King Krule. I recommend this as a first listen as well for others looking to get into the artist. 2. Tame Impala - “Borderline” The standout single (for me) from Tame Impala’s 2020 album The Slow Rush, this song is incredibly hard not to love from any standpoint. With a typically infectious drum pattern as well as angelic vocals from Kevin Parker, this one fits in well on the shelves upon shelves of Tame classics. 3. Solange - “Borderline (An Ode to Self Care)” Beautifully blending trap drums and synth runs with her own harmonic singing (with help from A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip), Solange shows how well she is able to play off of her production with her singing, and vice versa. Standing as a great representation of an album that ranks among the greatest of 2016, this one will forever be special to me. |
